Pros
- Folds flat, weighs almost nothing
- Adjusts to eye level with a single click
- Grips the laptop firmly once latched
Cons
- Plastic latches feel like the failure point
- No room for a USB-C dongle on the underside
The Roost is what convinced me a travel stand could be more than a compromise. It folds to about the size of a foot-long ruler and lives in the laptop sleeve of my bag.
In practice, the latching mechanism takes ten seconds to set up; I do it without thinking now. It holds my 14” laptop dead still under heavy typing — no perceptible wobble. Heat is fine because the laptop sits in a frame rather than on a slab.
The one thing I worry about is the latches. They are plastic and they take the entire load. If one cracks I am holding a paperweight. Two years in, no sign of that, but it stays on my mind.
Verdict
If you carry a laptop most days, this is the one. If your laptop lives on a desk, get something heavier and cheaper.
