Laptop stand

A good stand pays for itself in posture and airflow. I have rotated through a few; here are the ones worth talking about.

I started using a laptop stand after a year of neck strain made it obvious that a screen at table-height was a non-starter. The principles I look for: rigid, foldable, doesn’t trap heat, and tall enough that the top of the screen lands at eye level when I am sitting up straight.

Below are the variants I have used long enough to have an opinion on. The shared thesis: portability and rigidity trade off, and how much you care depends on whether the stand mostly lives on your desk or in your bag.

How I evaluate

  • Rigidity — does it wobble when I type firmly?
  • Heat — does the laptop run hotter on it than on the desk?
  • Portability — fits in a backpack pocket without ceremony?
  • Height — gets the top of the screen to roughly eye level?
